Read-a-Thon Volunteer Resources

Read-a-Thon Volunteer Resources

The 3rd & 4th Grade Read-a-Thon is set for the weekend of March 18-19, 2022. We need a lot of creative help before the event and many hands for the weekend set-up. For more information on our craft needs, review the "Craft Sign Up" below and the how-to instructions on this page.

Our book is Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly. All PES 3rd & 4th graders were given a copy on 11/19/21. See our Read-a-Thon section of this website for more resources for students.

For the first time, we are hosting this event for two grades. The current 4th graders missed this event last year, so we have included them in our fun 2022 adventure! We need parents of students in both grades to help out!

The events will take place on:
Friday, 3/18/22- 5:45PM-9:45PM- 3rd GRADE
Saturday, 3/19/22- 5:45PM-9:45PM- 4th GRADE

We need help leading various activities that are set for the day of each event. Please sign up on the "Event Help Sign Up" below. We will contact those interested in leading an activity to see which best suits you. We also need help at the registration desk, checking in students at the start of the event and then these people will also help with a potential snack during the event.

Please note that your Volunteer Clearances are up-to-date and on file with the main office. See more details here: https://pes.ucfsd.org/volunteer. If you are unsure whether you have these filed or not, just call the main office at 610.793.9241.

Paper Plate Whales
Crafters will make whales from basic 9 inch paper plates. You will also need scissors, a pencil and a black marker.  The whales should be left white, you do not need to color them.  You also can skip adding the water spout.  Final product should look like the picture below.

This website shows the steps of making these adorable whales in pictures. It helps to make your first whale and then use that one as a pattern for the rest

Cardboard Fish

Crafters should cut fish shapes out of cardboard; any basic fish shape will do. Fish should be anywhere between 2 and 4 feet tall. The fish should then be painted with neon paint of all colors. The added paper details aren’t needed, but feel free to use your imagination. You can paint however you would like! The video can be found here- Cardboard Fish

Sea Creature Silhouettes

Crafters will make black sea creature silhouettes with black paper from school.
The black paper is available for anyone to pick up on the bench in the main entrance at school.

Crafters will draw the outline of any sea creature and cut them out. This is just a silhouette, so face or body details on the creatures are not necessary. Creatures needed are
  • crabs (2-3 ft),
  • stingrays (2-3 ft),
  • seahorses (2-3ft),
  • octopuses (4-5 ft),
  • mermaids (4-5 ft),
  • hammerhead sharks (4-5 ft),
  • other sharks (4-5ft),
  • and any other sea creature that you can think of!
Feel free to make them as large or small as you would like! The guidelines above are just a suggestion.

Snowflakes on Strings

Crafters will make snowflakes on strings. We need 1-3 snowflakes on each string. Flakes should be about 8 inches long with a space of 3-4 inches between flakes. A string of 3 is roughly 33-36" long. Need some help making those gorgeous flakes? Check out this video- Snowflakes. Snowflakes do not have to be the 3D version, as seen in this video. Snowflakes of all shapes and sizes welcome!

Tablecloth Kelp

Crafters will cut "kelp" from tablecloths. Dollar store tablecloths are ideal. They should be roughly 54”x108” in shades of green. Here is a website to help you-Kelp

Step one - unwrap the tablecloth from the packaging but leave it folded the long way.  Like this:
Picture
Step two - cut up through the folded edges up the sides leaving about a foot at the top. Like this:

Step three - make horizontal ladder cuts up along each side. It is very forgiving, the cuts don't need to be all the same angle or perfect.  Leave about an inch in the middle.

You're done!  The final product should look like the picture below.
If you made a mistake and have two or more pieces of "kelp", send it in, we can still use it!
